The Ultimate Guide to Removing Pet Stains: Keep Your Home Fresh and Clean
Owning a pet brings a great deal of joy to countless people. Is there anything better than being greeted at the end of a hard day to your dog’s wagging tail? What’s more relaxing than cozying up on the couch with a book or a movie with your cat purring beside you?
But unfortunately, every good thing in life comes with its drawbacks. And when it comes to pets, those drawbacks come in the form of stains on the carpet. We’ve all been there. Your pet can’t make it outside quickly enough; before you know it, you have an accident in the house. Or your pup goes out after a rainstorm and tracks muddy paw prints into the house. And sometimes those accidents are hard to clean up! Not only that, but stains that remain on your carpet and floors can lead to the growth of harmful bacteria and mold over time. That’s why pet stains must be removed as quickly as possible. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to make that happen so you can get back to enjoying those tail wags and couch snuggles with your furry friends.
How to Remove Pet Stains
For Fresh Stains
Act quickly! As soon as you can, clean the area.
- Remove any solids (such as feces, vomit, or chunks of mud) with paper towels and gloves. Be careful not to smear the solids onto the carpet, making the stain worse.
- If the stain comes from urine or blood, and the area is still wet and soiled, apply pressure to the site by pushing on it, standing on it, or placing something heavy on top, such as a detergent container. Repeat if needed until the area becomes barely damp. The more you can remove before it, the easier it will be to manage the stain and odor.
- Rinse the area or dampen it with cool water. Try applying undiluted soda water directly to the site for tough pet stains. Allow the water to soak into the stain for about one minute.
- Use a towel to blot up the stain. If you need to absorb any excess water, apply pressure.
- Assess the stain. Use an oxygen- or enzyme-based pet stain remover if the stain is still visible or has an ammonia odor. Remember that your pet may return to the stained area if it smells its scent. Avoid aerosol fresheners, as they don’t eliminate smells; they mask the unpleasant odor with a more pleasant one.
For Set Stains
Repeat the above steps and use a neutralizer for pet odors on an older stain. A carpet stain remover may be needed if the stain remains visible after cleaning. An odor-disposer multi-action enzyme formulation should completely remove all stains and odors con water-based surfaces.
Steam cleaning is another option, but the Humane Society recommends avoiding it, as heat can permanently set odors and pet stains. Ammonia and vinegar are also not recommended for removing pet stains. These chemicals can trigger your pet and cause it to mark the area with its scent. Investing in a cleaning product designed specifically for carpets, such as the Crosswave Pet Pro, is a different approach. It works great on carpets as well as other floors. If all else fails, consult with a carpet cleaning professional.
